Description

35, including 35A and 35B, High Street is a pair of houses that have been converted into shops and a flat. They date from the early 19th century and likely incorporate a core from the 17th century. The buildings are constructed of painted brick, with the right-hand gable end rendered, possibly over a timber frame, and sit on a sandstone plinth. The slate roof covers three storeys. The eaves feature a dentil brick cornice with paired headers, and there is a central brick ridge stack. The façade has three bays with glazing bar sash windows: 16-pane on the first floor and 12-pane on the second floor, all with painted stone cills and painted stone lintels that have inscribed keystones, although some glazing bars have been removed. The early 19th-century wooden shopfronts have attenuated fluted Doric columns, with 20th-century fascias obscuring the frieze and later plate-glass windows. To the left, there is a side passage with a 20th-century door and rusticated voussoirs. The interior has not been fully inspected, but some timber framing has been noted. The buildings are included for their group value.
