Description

The Hermitage Flats are two houses that have been converted into flats, arranged in an irregular L-plan and consisting of two parts. The main block dates from the mid- to late 18th century and has undergone alterations in the late 20th century. It is built of rendered brick with a slate roof and has two storeys. The building features a moulded plinth and a parapet with stone coping. There is an integral brick end stack on the left and an external brick end stack on the right. The façade has seven bays with glazing bar sash windows, although the lower leaves have been replaced by 20th-century casements. These windows have painted stone cills and rusticated stone lintels with raised keystones. The ground-floor windows have been cut down, retaining only a small portion of the sash at the top. A 20th-century glazed door is located in the second bay from the left, and there is a ground-floor lean-to verandah supported by panelled wooden posts and eaves brackets.

The wing, which is at right angles to the left, is likely from the 17th century and was remodelled in the early 19th century. It has a rendered timber frame that is lined to resemble ashlar at the rear, with a slate roof on the rear and 20th-century machine tiles on the front. This wing has two framed bays and is one storey with an attic. The north-west front features integral brick end stacks and a roughly central brick stack behind the ridge. There are two gabled semi-dormers; the left one has a boxed 16-pane glazing bar sash, while the right one has a two-light Gothick wooden casement with Y-tracery. The ground floor has a group of five glazing bar sashes, consisting of 12 and 20 panes, with a wooden cill, divided by panelled wooden mullions that support a continuous frieze and cornice. The entrance is located at the rear. The wing faces onto Saint Mary's Street and was formerly part of No. 20, Saint Mary's Street, but is now part of The Hermitage. The interior has not been inspected.
