Description

The Black Bear Public House is a house, likely dating to the late 16th or early 17th century, with later 17th-century additions and remodelling in the late 19th century. It is timber-framed, with 19th-century replacement timbers and plaster infill. The roof is slate, with a hipped front. The building has an irregular T-plan, consisting of one bay with a projecting three-bay cross wing to the left. The cross wing has a jettied first floor supported by small, shaped and fluted 19th-century brackets. There is a brick ridge stack to the right, and a brick stack to the right of the ridge at the rear of the cross wing. The windows are 1:1 in arrangement, with 19th-century three-light wooden casements. A boarded front door is located to the right, with shaped brackets supporting a raking hood, flanked by small two-light wooden casements. The left-hand return front has four windows with two- and three-light wooden casements; a half-glazed door is to the left, and boarded basement doors are to the right. The rear of the building has exposed timber framing to the first floor. The cross wing includes a timber-framed lean-to, and the gable end exhibits an exposed collar truss with queen struts and king strut. There is evidence of raised eaves. The interior ground floor shows visible timber framing, with decorative parallel diagonal strutting to the front bay. Features include deep-chamfered beams with ogee stops, chamfered joists, and chamfered corner posts. A modified old fireplace is at the rear, incorporating a chamfered wooden lintel.
