Description
No. 38 Horse Market is an office building dating from around 1840, designed in the Tudor style. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features a grey slate roof with stone gable copings and chimneys. The building is two storeys high and has a symmetrical one-window range. A high moulded plinth supports the structure.
The entrances on either side are framed by chamfered Tudor arches and have block-stopped hoodmoulds above shaped doors with 3-over-3 panels. The central feature is a full-height canted bay, which includes plain sashes arranged in a 1:3:1-light configuration. The ground floor windows are set within Tudor arches, while the first-floor windows are in chamfered surrounds, each with a label mould above. A string course runs beneath the first-floor bay window, which is topped by panels below the roof parapet on the eaves string. The gables are adorned with roll-moulded coping and end chimneys, and there is a central stone stack chimney along the ridge, featuring five tall Tudor-style pots with plinths and cornices. The interior has not been inspected.
