Description

This is an early 19th-century house, now a shop, located in Horse Market, Barnard Castle. The building is constructed of coursed squared stone with ashlar dressings, and has a Welsh slate roof with stone gable coping and chimneys. It is three storeys high and originally had a two-window front. The shop front has been altered in the late 19th and late 20th centuries. It now incorporates former doorways leading to a yard and the house itself, which are now recessed lights. A central glazed door is flanked by plate-glass windows set on rock-faced stone stall risers. The shop front has a renewed fascia with a plain cornice and a folding canopy supported by hinged iron stays. The first floor features two canted bay windows with a bracketed cornice and flat roof. The sashes in these bays, and the second floor windows, have four panes and are set within projecting plain stone surrounds. The roof has a right-hand gable coping with a curved kneeler, and tall end chimneys with top bands. The interior has not been inspected. The building was listed on 22nd February 1973.
