Description
The National Westminster Bank, formerly known as the National Provincial Bank, is a bank building located in Barnard Castle, dating from around 1890. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a plinth and raised quoins, topped with a Welsh slate roof featuring slate-hung dormers. The building has two storeys and a five-window range.
On the ground floor, there is a central round-headed door with vermiculated rustication and stepped high voussoirs. To the left of the door, there are two round-headed windows, which have been renewed, also featuring similar rustication. To the right, a projecting square bay has rusticated quoins and two pairs of plain windows. A continuous dentilled cornice runs along the ground floor.
The first floor is marked by projecting quoins and features four-pane sash windows set within architraves. Above, there is a dentilled eaves entablature with a modillioned gutter cornice. The roof includes three gabled dormers, each with four-pane sashes, pilasters, and pediments, connected by a blocking course. The left parapet pier connects to an adjacent parapet, while the right gable has stone coping. The building is finished with corniced end chimneys. The interior has not been inspected.
