Description
No. 5 Market Square is a house with a shop, built around 1850. It is constructed from Ham Hill stone ashlar and features a slate roof with brick stacks. The building has a double-depth plan and is designed in the Italianate style. It stands three storeys tall and has a three-window range.
Distinctive architectural features include a deep cornice and blocking course that extend to each side, as well as rusticated quoins. All windows are 20th-century plate-glass sashes with horns, set within moulded architraves. The second-floor windows have a moulded cill-band supported by small brackets, while the first-floor windows feature floating cornices on consoles and guttae brackets beneath the moulded cill-band.
To the right of the ground floor, there is a doorway with a moulded cornice above a round-arched doorcase that has a Gibbs surround. The shopfront, which dates from the late 19th century, includes a set-back door next to the main doorcase and features a moulded fascia flanked by elaborate consoles on Ionic pilasters. The interior has not been inspected.
