Description

The George Hotel is a mid-18th century hotel with a rear left wing dating to the mid-19th century. It is situated on Market Square in Crewkerne. The main block is constructed of Ham Hill stone ashlar with a hipped slate roof and brick stacks to the side walls, while the rear wing is similar in style. The building has a double-depth plan to the street-facing block and an irregular U-shape overall.

The symmetrical front elevation has three storeys and five windows. A rusticated quoin detail is present, with the central bay slightly stepped forward and a moulded cornice to an open pediment. All windows are 20th-century horned plate-glass sashes in moulded architraves; the central first-floor window has a segmental pediment. An elliptical, hollow-moulded, rusticated arch serves as a carriage entrance, extending approximately 15 metres, and is supported by three beams. The rear courtyard incorporates various buildings, with those to the right canting inwards and now serving as shops. These have Ham Hill stone ashlar with moulded architraves, keystones to 8/8-pane sashes, and a continuous cill course to the first floor. Two original doors with raised-and-fielded panels remain. The wing to the left has reconstructed stone architraves, and the first floor functions as an assembly room with rendered walls and large 12/12-pane sashes.

The interior includes an 18th-century square stone fireplace with a moulded outer edge and a late-19th-century wooden mantelpiece fixed to the lintel. A partial arch brace is visible in the roof structure at the junction of the main building and the rear right wing. The assembly room on the first floor of the rear left wing retains aspects of its mid-19th-century character, including a high coved ceiling with vented ceiling roses, a cornice, a dado rail, and two elliptical arches to the left-hand wall. Records indicate a hotel has been present on the site since 1541, and the Crewkerne Assembly was held at The George in the 18th century.
