Description
41 Market Square is a shop built around 1870. It features Ham Hill stone ashlar and a crested slate roof, with a double-depth plan. The building has two storeys and an attic, presenting a symmetrical one-window range. A large dormer showcases carved initials in a Dutch gable, topped with a ball finial and flanked by scrolled consoles that rest on a vase balustrade, which has four balusters on each side, each topped with ball finials above the cornices of the flanking piers. The window in the dormer is an 8/2-pane sash with a continuous moulded cornice at cill level. The first-floor has a corbelled out canted bay with a hipped stone roof, featuring an 8/2-pane sash in the center and 4/2-pane sashes on the sides. The 20th-century shop front sits on a stone plinth beneath a moulded cornice, framed by reeded pilasters with cornices below barrel-topped moulded consoles. The interior has not been inspected. This building is included for its group value.
