Description

No. 25 Market Place is a house that has been converted into a shop and flat. It dates from the mid-18th century, with a shop front added in the late 19th century. The building is constructed of ashlar stone with channelled rustication and features a slate roof with stone gable copings and chimneys. It stands three storeys tall and has a five-window range.

On the left side, the shop front projects slightly and includes a recessed central glazed door with an overlight. The stall risers are low, and the mullions are decorated with acanthus buds at the base and mid-shaft. Slender capitals support an entablature that has a deep cornice. The mid-shaft acanthus also supports hinged iron stays for a cloth canopy. To the right, there is a six-panel door with an overlight that has curved glazing bars, framed by a Gibbs surround with a quintuple key that breaks through a high pediment. The upper floors feature architraves on the sash windows, with 12-pane windows on the first floor and 6-pane windows on the second. The building has a deep eaves gutter cornice, and the roof has gable copings that rest on moulded kneelers. There are chimneys at each end, with the left one truncated and the right one corniced. The rear of the building displays broad glazing bars on the stair windows, with a round arch on the first floor and a pointed arch on the second. The interior has not been inspected.
