Description

15 and 17 Market Place is a house that has been converted into a hotel and shop, believed to date from 1690 according to historical deeds. The building features a 19th-century shop front on the right and an early 20th-century bar front on the left. Constructed from coursed squared stone with ashlar quoins and painted dressings, it has a roof made of stone slates with stone gable coping and brick chimneys. The structure is L-shaped with a long rear wing and consists of three storeys with a four-window range.

The main entrance, located in the third bay, features a six-panel door with a three-pane overlight set in a pedimented architrave surround. The bar front on the left has a projecting shallow square bay with wood mullions supporting four lights and a transom. The small shop front on the right includes a half-glazed door on the left and a small square bay window on the right, all beneath a continuous entablature. Above these, the first floor has sashes with glazing bars, while the second floor features six-pane sashes, all with painted architraves. The roof has gable copings that rest on moulded kneelers.

At the rear, the wing consists of a three-storey, three-window range and a two-storey, three-window range. Inside, the building has fire screens added to a wide open-well stair, which features shallow risers, a grip handrail, and a boxed balustrade. The first-floor room, which spans the full width of the building, has later partitions and includes raised fielded panelling, cupboards, panelled shutters, and panelling below the windows, along with a deep chair rail. The doors in this area have architraves and panelled reveals. The second-floor front rooms contain two-panel cupboard doors with L-hinges, two-panel doors, a bolection-moulded stone fireplace surround, and splayed boarded recesses below the windows. The rear wing also features splayed window recesses with seats, some windows with broad glazing bars, and plain stone fireplace surrounds.
