Description
The King's Head Rest Home, located on the west side of Market Place in Barnard Castle, is a late 19th-century building originally designed as a hotel and now functioning as a rest home. The structure features thin courses of squared stone with a rusticated plinth, complemented by ashlar quoins and dressings. It has a roof made of Welsh slate, adorned with stone gable coping and stone chimneys.
The building stands three stories tall and has a four-window range. On the left side, there is an eight-panel door with a blocked semicircular overlight above it. The ground floor is made of ashlar stone, which is situated between the plinth and an impost string that connects the doors and windows. This impost string supports keyed round heads over the door and paired windows, as well as an elliptical vehicle arch on the right side.
The windows throughout are plain sashes, with paired windows in the inner bays, all framed in stone surrounds that feature brackets supporting the sill-string. The heads of the first-floor windows are low segmental arches with an impost string, while the second-floor window heads are straight and meet the eaves. A cornice with eaves gutters rests on corbels positioned between the windows. The roof is finished with gable copings on corbelled kneelers and has tall, corniced ridge chimneys located at both ends and between the bays. The interior has not been inspected.
