Description

Nos. 6, 6A, and 6B on Galgate is a house that has been converted into two shops and a flat. It dates from the early 18th century, with late 19th-century shop fronts. The building features uneven stone courses with ashlar dressings and a roof covered in green French tiles, complete with brick chimneys. It stands two storeys high and has a three-window range.

To the right of the center, there is a tooled ashlar surround to a renewed yard passage door. The left shop front (No. 6B) includes a panelled surround to the door on the right and a wide plate-glass window beneath a fascia with a cornice. The smaller shop front on the right (No. 6A) has a half-glazed door on the left and a plain window in a simple wood surround under a basic fascia with a thin cornice. Above the door, there is a blocked narrow window, and the plain sashes over the shops have shallow segmental-arched heads with rough voussoirs. The roof features swept eaves and end chimneys, with the left chimney made of thin bricks and the right on a large plinth.

Inside, the passage reveals early 18th-century two-panel doors leading to the shop on the left front and to a room behind the shop on the right. The entrance to the flat above No. 6 is accessed through 20th-century doors located in the right wall of the passage and in the range to the rear of No. 6A.
