Description
Malthus' Summerhouse, located by the swimming pool at Haileybury and Imperial Service College, is an early 19th-century summerhouse. This small octagonal building features a timber frame, with the rear boarded and set on a stucco plinth. It has a pointed slate roof topped with a small finial. The summerhouse faces east down the pool and has three segmental arcaded sides supported by fluted pilasters with moulded caps. The entrance is raised by two steps, while the sides are flush panelled in timber, each with a small ungazed rectangular window framed by a moulded architrave. Inside, there is a conical boarded ceiling. This historic summerhouse was originally part of the grounds of Hailey House and is said to have been used by Reverend T. R. Malthus while writing his 'Essay on Population'. It was moved into the bath enclosure in 1936.
