Description

The summerhouse, built around 1835, is located approximately 20 meters south of Maidford House Farmhouse. It features cob rendered brick and wooden rusticwork with a thatched roof that is gabled at the front and hipped with a curving shape at the rear. The design includes an entrance passage that runs crossways, leading to a circular main space. The front showcases split-branch rusticwork with an octagonal window framed decoratively. Above this is a pediment-like gable with a rock-work center, flanked by rusticwork doors and small windows towards the rear.

Inside, the entrance passage is adorned with elaborate split-twig decoration applied to bark, and the door and window frames have finely wrought surrounds, with the split-twigs arranged mostly in a herringbone pattern. The main space features walls made of shell and rock-work, with a fitted bench that wraps around the interior and has curving arms at both ends near the doorway, all covered in fine split-twig work. In the center stands a matching Regency-style pedestal table, which has decorative root pieces on its pedestal. This summerhouse is an unusual and remarkable survival.
