Description

Adstone House is a manor house dating from the mid to late 17th century. It is constructed of dressed ironstone, with a plain-tile hipped roof, a stone ridge stack, and blue brick lateral stacks, one on a stone base. The building is arranged in an H-shape. The house has two storeys and an attic, with a three-window front. A central part-glazed door is set within a moulded wood surround, protected by a timber lintel and porch. Above the door is a three-light chamfered stone mullion window with a hood mould. Similar four-light windows are found on the ground and first floors of the wings, with hood moulds to those on the ground floor. Blocked one-light windows, with double-chamfered stone surrounds and hood moulds, are set into the inner sides of the wings on both ground and first floors. Two two-light flat-faced stone mullion cellar windows are present in the right wing. A chamfered stone plinth and eaves run around the building. The stone ridge stack features four square stone flues with chamfered bases and moulded tops, and hipped roof dormers are visible.

Inside the house, there are stop-chamfered spine beams and a 17th century open-well cantilevered timber staircase with fat turned balusters and ball finials. The staircase extends from the ground floor to the attic and includes splat balusters on the top landing. A section of strapwork panelling, originating from a former Long Gallery at the top of the house, is displayed on the staircase. A later, probably 18th century, staircase sits in the hall, distinguished by stick balusters, a ramped and wreathed handrail, and carved tread ends. One room contains 17th century pegged panelling, and the kitchen includes a spice cupboard with labelled drawers.

Attached to the left side of the house is a garden wall with ridged stone coping, which encloses the garden along the road frontage.
