GREAT AMWELL LONDON ROAD (east side) Hertford Heath Great War Memorial Cross at Haileybury and Imperial Sevce College on terrace in middle of south front

War memorial. 1923 by Reginald Blomfield. Portland Stone 'Cross of Sacrifice'. A tall tapering cross with tapering arms and expanded terminals. Deeply chamfered rectangular section continued through moulded base of cross, large inscribed drum with its stepped foot on 2 steps of unequal height and corresponding plinth bringing it up to the level of the terrace. All of an elongated octagonal plan parallel with the S range of the main Quad. On the front (S) a large Damascus sword in bronze originally gilded. A simple monument on the central axis of the S front. Included for group value. (Blunt (1966) 22,28).
