Great War Memorial Cross At Haileybury And Imperial Service College On Terrace In Middle Of South Front

The Great War Memorial Cross at Haileybury and Imperial Service College, located on the terrace in the middle of the south front, is a war memorial designed by Reginald Blomfield in 1923. Made of Portland stone, it features a tall tapering cross with tapering arms and expanded terminals. The cross has a deeply chamfered rectangular section that continues through a moulded base, with a large inscribed drum set on two steps of unequal height, supported by a corresponding plinth that raises it to the level of the terrace. The memorial has an elongated octagonal plan that aligns with the south range of the main quadrangle. On the front (south side), there is a large bronze Damascus sword, which was originally gilded. This simple monument is positioned on the central axis of the south front and is included for its group value.
