Description

The railings and gates at Haileybury and Imperial Service College along the frontage to London Road date from the early 19th century. They are made of wrought iron with decorative cast iron features. The design includes separate pairs of gates connected by short stretches of railing, featuring a convex bowed section. The railings have simple square uprights topped with cast spearheads, and there are heavier buttressed bars at intervals on the inside. At the beginning of the bowed stretch, a low standard has paired wrought iron buttresses with cast iron decorative infill and a terminal adorned with anthemion fronds and rosettes. The tall gate piers also have similar infill and support wrought iron that rises to a pronged lamp support, which holds painted (possibly copper) lanterns. The gates are constructed like the railings but have a curved brace that rises to the center of each leaf. These features are an essential part of the college's frontage.
