Description

South Lodge, located at Haileybury and Imperial Service College, is a school building constructed in 1899 by Reginald Blomfield, replacing an older lodge. The building is made of red brick with stone dressings and features a Westmorland Slate roof. It is a tall rectangular structure with one storey and attics, presenting a seven-windowed west front facing the road, and a gabled entrance at the north end leading to the drive. The design includes stone quoins and an eaves band with a moulded wooden cornice. The gables are topped with triangular pediments, and the central projection on the road front is three windows wide, featuring a large lunette in the gable and stone keystones above the slightly recessed boxed sash windows, which have 6/6 panes. The narrower sash windows on this front have 4/4 panes.

The high entrance door on the north side is accessed by three steps and is framed by an eared moulded architrave with a stepped keystone, supported by stone Tuscan engaged columns. This entrance features an inscribed beam and a broken pediment. The tympanum is crafted entirely in fine red rubbed brickwork, showcasing a central moulded stone window surround with a projecting keystone and apron. The east front mirrors the road front but includes a round arched doorway within the central pedimented projection.
