Description
The war memorial, located at the junction of Baldock Street and Church Street in Ware, was built in 1921 and designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield. It is made of Portland stone and features a central 'cross of sacrifice' with an octagonal shaft and arms, along with a bronze sword fixed to its face. The base consists of diminishing octagonal offsets that rise from a central plinth. On either side of the memorial, there are screen walls that include cast panels with fossil aggregate and lead lettering that lists the names of the casualties. The return ends are made of Portland stone, featuring offset coping with a segmental curved profile top and moulded pilaster bases. The base of the memorial has a raised curved step made of Portland stone, and the surrounding area is paved with red brick in a herringbone pattern.
