Description

This is a house, currently used as commercial premises with a ground floor shop, dating from the 16th century. It was significantly altered in the early 19th century with a new facade and shopfront. The building is timber-framed and has a yellow brick exterior in a Flemish bond pattern. It has a projecting parapet above a dentil course and steeply pitched tiled roofs with a box dormer to the front and one facing Priory Street. A tall brick chimney is shared with the adjacent building at No.3 Baldock Street.

The building has two storeys and attic space. There are two sash windows with glazing bars, set within flat rubbed arches, and a central sash window beneath a lintel. A single sash window is on the Priory Street elevation. A 19th-century shopfront is located on the left, turning the corner onto Priory Street, featuring a corner entrance with double-leaf glazed doors featuring lower reeded panels. Reeded pilasters flank the ends of the display windows on both the Baldock Street and Priory Street frontages. The shopfront has arcaded plate glass windows above which are pierced vents. A five-panel door, with the top three panels glazed, is set within a narrow architrave surround with a cut bracketed cornice hood.

The carriageway to No.1 Priory Street reveals exposed timber studs and curved bracing in the left-hand end wall. The building's courtyard layout, shared with No.1 Priory Street, and Nos 3 and 5 Baldock Street, may relate to the site of a former inn. It is believed that The Griffin Inn occupied the site in the mid-17th century.
