Description

The Edward Chuck tomb, located in the west churchyard of Ware Town, was built in 1852. This tomb is designed in the form of a sarcophagus set on a stepped plinth, all crafted from Portland stone. It features a Neo-classical style, with the sarcophagus elevated on four claw feet. The design includes a moulded base, coved sides with inscribed panels, and an overhanging top adorned with a carved leaf surround and a raised lid. Edward Chuck (1782-1852) was the principal maltster in Ware and lived at No. 87 High Street for the last 20 years of his life. He tragically died in a carriage accident, and his widow, Elizabeth Moore Chuck, is also buried in the tomb.
