Description

No. 3 Baldock Street is a house that has been converted into offices. It dates from the 17th and 18th centuries, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building is timber-framed and plastered, featuring a modillioned eaves cornice, part of which has been boxed out to form a gutter. The roof has two heights, with the left side corresponding to the structure of the third bay of the adjacent No. 1, and the remainder aligning with No. 5 on the right. A narrow-brick chimneystack, set diagonally and adorned with a moulded cornice and offsets, is located on the right side and also serves No. 5.

The building has two storeys and an attic on the left. On the first floor, there are two flush-set sash windows with glazing bars. The ground floor features 1970s single and triple light sashes with glazing bars, along with a modern hardwood six-panel entrance door in a slim surround on the left, all of which replaced a 19th-century shopfront.

Inside, some 18th-century panelling and a bold moulded cornice can be found in the front right-hand room on the first floor. Together with No. 1 Priory Street and Nos. 1 and 5 Baldock Street, this building may have formed the site of The Griffin Inn in the mid-17th century.
