Description

Nos 21 and 23 Hailey Lane is a terrace of two houses, originally built as four between 1806 and 1809 by William Wilkins while he was constructing Haileybury East India College. The houses are made of white brick and have a hipped slate roof. Each house was originally two stories high with two windows facing south. The standard design included two small segmental arched windows on the upper floor, a very wide segmental arched window on the ground floor, and a similarly arched entrance door to the right of the window. The ground floor features 3-light casement windows, while the upper floor has small paned sash windows. Over time, two of the large windows have been narrowed for later 19th-century sash windows, and two doorways have been bricked up to create windows. The rear slope of the roof extends over a shallow two-story section at the back, and there are grouped chimneys on the mid wall. This building represents an interesting early experiment in terrace housing by Wilkins and forms a group with No 13.
