Description
The summerhouse located in the pleasure grounds of Stackpole Court is a Grade II listed building. It measures approximately 7.2 meters wide by 5.4 meters deep and features a room with three open archways facing east, along with a shed or sheds at the rear facing west. The architectural style is notably heavy and formal.
The front of the summerhouse showcases finely worked ashlar masonry with rusticated joints above a stylobate consisting of two steps. It has round-headed arches with deep voussoirs that blend into the coursing of the wall, a projecting plinth, and a string course that projects at the level of the arch springs. Additionally, there is a projecting cornice linked to projecting keystones, and a parapet adorned with three ornamental stone globes, each supported by square girding blocks at mid-height, similar to those found on the North Lodge gate-piers. The roof, which has been restored, slopes to the rear while maintaining a full-height parapet around the two sides.
At the rear, behind a dividing wall, a small section of the building is designated for service use, possibly for unpacking and serving picnics or for storing garden furniture. This area features rubble masonry that is rendered, contrasting sharply with the more refined front, as it has a completely unadorned utilitarian character.
