Description

Courtyard Flats is the stable and coach-house block of Stackpole Court, extensively rebuilt in 1843-1844 to the designs of Henry Ashton. It features a symmetrical design with a double-depth eleven-bay stable range at the north and two rear wings that originally housed coach-houses, harness rooms, a gun room, and stairs. The main elevation is faced in local limestone ashlar, finished with pointed chisel-drafted margins, while the other elevations were originally similar but have been recently rendered and painted. The front elevation windows have flat voussoir heads, and the rougher stone plinth, which is hammer-dressed, likely comes from the previous stable block. The upper windows are recessed with sashes of three panes, while the lower windows have sashes of six panes. The exterior form, particularly the front elevation, was preserved during the conversion of the building to flats by the National Trust.

The roof space has become a bat colony and is designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest.

There is a coach entrance through a central archway, which is slightly advanced and heightened. Above this is a clock tower set on a square base with chamfered corners, topped with a lead-covered cupola that has an elliptical profile and an iron weather vane above a copper ball. The main arch is semicircular-headed, with a simple cornice above the archway and at the top of the clock tower. There is a small tablet at the center of the clock tower, but it has no inscription. The rear wall of the courtyard features central piers and a gate.

This building is listed as the most important surviving part of the 1840s improvements at Stackpole Court and is also recognized for its group value with other remaining structures of Stackpole Court.
