Description
The Cage or Lockup is a town lockup built in the early 18th century, with its walltop and roof renewed in the mid 19th century. It is constructed of red brick in English bond, with the top of the wall in Flemish bond featuring a toothed corbelled top. The gable triangles are covered with dark weatherboarding, and the boarded roof is covered in sheet iron. This small square building measures about 3 meters by 3 meters and is oriented north-south, with a central door on the south side. The door is recessed, battened, and framed, with decorative iron hinges hung on iron pins from a heavy frame beneath a timber lintel. The wallplates and purlins have shaped ends that project at each end. This structure is of special historic interest as a local antiquity.
