Description
Jacksons is a house located on Church Street in Buntingford, dating from the early 17th century. It originally has two middle bays from this period, with a west bay added in the late 17th century. The building was floored in the 18th century, during which a central chimney was inserted. The east bay was floored in the late 18th century, and projecting end chimneys were added at that time. There is a single-storey butcher's shop at the northwest corner, which dates from the early 19th century.
The house features a timber frame that is roughcast, topped with a steep old red tile roof. There are three windows on each floor, with Yorkshire sliding casements that have small panes on the eastern part of the building, while the other areas have small-paned flush casements. The entrance to the house is now through the former butcher's shop.
Inside, the building displays jowled posts, straight tension bracing, and wattle-and-daub infill in the partitions. The roof has clasped purlins, and there is a chamfered axial beam with notched stops in the middle bay. The end bays feature cross-beams and square exposed joists, along with a face-halved bladed scarf joint in the wallplate.
