Description

Layston Cottage and Number 3A are two houses formed from an early 16th-century hall house with 17th and 18th-century additions, and a 19th-century front extension. The timber frame is roughcast with diaper pargetting on the jettied middle range, and the building has steep old red tile roofs. There's also flint and slate gabled front wing with red brick dressings. The house is an irregular two storeys and attics, facing west, with the north crosswing and later north parts now separated as Number 3A. A parlour wing is located to the south. The entrance is into a through-passage at the north end of the hall, behind an inserted central chimney. A central chimney is in the north range with a rear stair in the angle with the north crosswing. The west front has gabled wings. A gabled dormer is above the centre, with a front jetty to the hall featuring bull-nosed joists. There’s an underbuilt jetty to the projecting north crosswing, and a canted tiled bay window to the south crosswing. The upper floor has 19th-century wood casements, while the hall has a triple-sash window with small panes and a four-panel raised-and-fielded door. Inside, there are clasped-purlin roofs and exposed timbers, and a two-light diamond mullioned window with a shutter groove at the head of the stairs in Number 3.
