Description

Bridewell House is a house, said to have been built in 1491. It was formerly the Waggon & Horses Inn before 1700, served as a bridewell until 1843, and subsequently used as two cottages. The house was renovated in 1939, with a western extension added in 1950, and a later southern garage wing. The building is timber-framed with a stuccoed sill, and has plastered walls with panelled pargetting. It has a steep tiled roof. The house has two storeys and four windows along its eastern facade. A central chimney is present, along with a lobby entry located a third from the southern end, and a smaller central chimney serving the northern bay. The windows are flush casements of horizontal proportions, with larger windows on the ground floor. A pointed head is present above the battened door. The chimneyhead features two stumpy shafts. Internally, there is a brick open fireplace.
