Description

No 34 on High Street is an inn that has been converted into shops and offices. It was rebuilt in the late 18th century or early 19th century, originating from a 17th-century structure. The building is constructed of grey gault brick that has been painted white, topped with a slate roof. The long rear wing to the southeast features a red tiled roof and part of the first floor is weatherboarded, above painted brick.

This is a two-storey L-shaped building with a west-facing street range that has four windows and an elliptical-arched carriageway leading to the yard, located under the second window from the south. A massive red brick chimney at the northeast corner indicates where the former northeast rear wing was situated. The front has box eaves with a moulded gutter, and the first floor features recessed sash windows with 6/6 panes and gauged flat arches. There is an archway in a projecting full-height brick panel, with a 20th-century small neo-Georgian shopfront at each end of the front, and a triple-sash window to the left of the archway. A segmental arch leads to the cellar below. The archway has black boarded double doors, and there is a delicate margin-light glazed screen in the rear wing next to the carriageway. A half-glazed raised and fielded door from the 18th century leads into the northern part of the building. This property was formerly known as The George & Dragon Inn.
