Description

This is a shop with a 16th-century origin, although it was largely rebuilt in the early 20th century, specifically in 1906 by the trustees of Henry Skynner’s Bequest, as evidenced by a plaque on the front. The building is timber-framed and has roughcast render with steep roofs covered in old red tiles. It is L-shaped, with a projecting street range that is jettied and partly supports the Old Clock Tower over a footway on the north side of the building. The architecture is in the Arts and Crafts style, featuring prominent circular red brick chimneys with moulded caps and a moulded cornice beneath the jetty, highlighting the ends of the bull-nosed joists. The rear wing is roughcast and includes a gabled stair tower in the angle. The east front has two two-over-four light leaded casement rectangular oriel windows, each supported by a central moulded bracket. A framed inscription plaque is positioned between the windows, below the overhanging eaves. The shopfront is wide, with a narrow fascia under the jetty, a central doorway, and three-light shop windows. The building contributes to a picturesque group of buildings.
