Description
No. 38 High Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It dates from the early 19th century and is constructed of yellow brick with stucco floor bands. The northern gable facing Church Street has similar brickwork that was exposed due to demolition. The rear parts are covered in white weatherboarding, and the building has slate roofs.
This tall three-storey townhouse faces west and has a double-pile plan with a central entrance and an internal gable chimney at the north end. The symmetrical front is three windows wide, featuring box eaves and bands. The second-floor windows are square, while the first-floor windows are deeper and the ground floor windows are wider, all separated by stucco bands. The windows are recessed sash types with margin lights, plastered reveals, and flat gauged arches. There is a low stucco plinth at the base.
The entrance consists of a recessed half-glazed panelled door set in panelled reveals. It is adorned with bi-symmetrical mouldings on the pilasters, a full entablature, and a flat hood supported by cut brackets.
