Description
The lock-up at Pensford is a mid-18th century structure. It has an octagonal plan and is built from mixed rubble-stone, including limestone, on a low stone plinth. The building is set into a bank at the rear (east) and features a later wall at an angle against its south side. The exterior is constructed of rubble-stone with freestone dressings, topped by a domed ashlar roof that has a ball finial, which is set back from the main body of the building. The entrance is centrally located on the west elevation, requiring a step up from the road and a high step into the building. The plank door is a 20th-century replacement, and there are high-level ventilation slits on each face flanking the door.
Inside, the lock-up consists of a single space with a stone bench on the east side and a floor made of limestone setts. An iron ring-shackle is fixed to the wall above the bench, and the ventilation slits are secured with a single wrought-iron vertical bar.
