Description

The Church of St Thomas a Becket is a parish church located in Pensford. The late 14th century tower remains from the original structure, while the rest of the church was rebuilt in 1869 by C.E. Giles of Taunton. The church consists of a west tower, nave, north porch, south aisle, south porch, and chancel. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings for the tower, and coursed sandstone rubble for the rest, featuring ashlar bands and dressings, all topped with slate roofs.

The west tower has three stages, with angle buttresses and a pyramidal slate roof that is set back behind an embattled parapet, which includes merlons pierced with cross-loops. There is a projecting polygonal stair tower at the southeast, two-light bell chamber windows with cusped heads and pierced stone grilles, a blocked west door with a moulded and pointed surround, and a restored three-light west window. The body of the church features a mix of Decorated style windows with buttresses between the bays, along with north and south gabled projecting porches and a short east end.

Inside, the tower has a tierceron vault with a central open roundel for bell ropes. The nave and chancel are supported by scissor braced rafters with a crown post on a tie beam.
