Description
The Great Bardfield Cage is a lock-up built in the early 19th century, specifically in 1816. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring some blue headers, and includes flint rubble. The gables are weatherboarded, and the roof is made of handmade red clay tiles. The building has a rectangular plan and contains two cells.
On the eastern elevation, there is one window with an external wooden shutter, a heavy oak door with iron studs that highlight the date 1816, a small barred window, and long hasped hinges. Inside, there is a second door that has 10 holes, which do not align with the window of the outer door, along with bolts. On the southern side, there is a simple wooden door leading to the other cell. The roof has been rebuilt. The lock-up was constructed in response to the Six Acts and was reported to have been last used in 1925.
