Description

The Gables is a house dating from the 14th century, with alterations made in the 17th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof covered with handmade red clay tiles. The building features a short hall range of one or two bays facing southeast, along with two crosswings, each consisting of two bays. There is an internal stack at the rear of the left crosswing and an axial stack at the junction of the hall and right crosswing. The house has two storeys and a three-window range of 20th-century casements. The entrance includes a 20th-century door and garage doors in the right crosswing. A small jetty is present on the left side, although it is not part of the original structure.

Inside, the house has jowled posts and some exposed studding. Originally, both crosswings jutted out at the front but have since been underbuilt, and the front wall of the hall range has been rebuilt to align with these underbuilt jetties. The hall range features an inserted floor with richly moulded beams from the early 16th century. The rear wall of the hall has been raised by approximately one metre, and the roof was rebuilt in the 17th century. The timbers on the left side of the right crosswing are covered in soot beneath the paint. The right crosswing includes a cambered tiebeam with one wide brace and a complete crownpost roof with axial braces of wide section. The left crosswing also has a cambered tiebeam with two arched braces, and its roof, originally of crownpost construction, has been rebuilt above the tiebeam.
