Description

This is a late 16th-century house, later divided into two separate dwellings, located on the south side of Green Lane in Braughing village. The building was divided into two houses in the 18th century. It has a timber frame with weatherboarding on the front and is roughcast, topped with a steep roof of old red tiles. An 18th-century single-storey kitchen extension, with a gabled slate roof, projects to the front and there is a shared central chimney built of red brick that rises prominently.

The house originally had a three-unit plan and faces north. It features jowled posts, heavy curved braces to tie beams, and a substantial queen-strut and purlin roof spanning one long bay to the east and two bays to the west of the chimney. A central partition on the first floor, along with the position of the chimneys to the rear of the ridge, indicates a previous timber-framed chimney. Access is provided through doors in lean-to front porches, and windows are casement style.
