Description

Clayton Cottage is a house dating from the late 16th century or early 17th century, with alterations made in the early 18th century and extensions added at both ends. It features a timber frame with red brick infill on the ground floor and red tile hanging on the first floor, while the end sections are roughcast. The house has a steep old red tile roof and is two stories tall, facing south. There are four windows on the first floor and six on the ground floor, with gable entrances. The windows are flush casement style, recently renewed with lattice leaded glazing.

The original central part of the house includes a hall and a subdivided inner room to the west. A large internal chimney is located in the narrow eastern bay, with a former cross-passage behind it. A cross-beam that divides the ground floor shows mortice and wattle holes from the original partition. At the rear of the eastern room, there is an 18th-century staircase featuring turned balusters and a moulded handrail in a short balustrade. Additionally, there is an early 19th-century projecting chimney at the western end of the central part and an internal chimney in the eastern extension.
