Description

The building consists of a barn and stable attached to Number 9, known as Forge Farm. The barn dates from the 17th century, while the stable was built in the 18th century. The western gable of the barn is made of 20th-century brick. The structure features timber frames resting on low red brick sills, with dark weatherboarding and steep roofs covered in old red tiles. The barn is tall with one and a half bays, facing north, and was originally larger, extending further to the west and connected to the house by a forge. The stable, which has two bays, joins the eastern bay of the barn at an angle on the north side.

Architecturally, the barn includes jowled bay-posts, unjowled mid-bay posts, and a mid-height rail that is tenoned in line. It has a clasped-purlin roof with a single purlin on each slope, and curved inclined queen-posts in an open truss without a collar, while the eastern gable truss features a collar and struts. There are straight braces connecting the tie-beams and wall-plates. The stable has split doors at both the front and back, located near the junction with the barn, and a three-light lattice leaded casement window in the north gable, which is protected by a later extension that is not of special interest. The stable exhibits primitive carpentry, utilizing natural S-curved braces for the wall plates, unjowled posts, and a side-purlin roof supported by a segmental curved member that is scarfed in the middle and curves upward from the wall plate to support the undersides of the two purlins.
