Description
Pipers Forge is a house dating from the 17th century, with a later 17th century south wing and a west crosswing that was rebuilt in the 18th century or later. It features a timber frame on a brick sill, with the south wing stuccoed and red brick infill, including some herringbone brickwork on the south wing. The ground floor of the main range and crosswing is cased in brick, and the house has steep old red tile roofs.
This T-shaped house has two storeys and attics, facing south and set slightly back from the road. The main range runs east-west and includes a large central chimney stack topped with complex polygonal conjoined shafts. The two-storey south range projects from the left half of the front, with four-light leaded casement windows on each floor of the right half. The entrance is now located at the south end of the south wing, accessed by a door on the east side with a gabled timber porch. To the right of the porch is a two-light casement window, with a three-light similar window above it.
The lower two-storey west crosswing has similar windows, a large capped-off side chimney projecting to the west, and a small side gable next to the chimney. The crosswing features unjowled corner posts, while jowled posts are found elsewhere, and the framework of the clasped-purlin roof is exposed in the east gable of the main range, supported on a collar truss. The house has wide-spaced full storey-height studs.
