Description

Forge Farm is a farmhouse that has been converted into a private house. It dates from the early 18th century and was raised to two storeys and significantly enlarged at the rear in the mid-18th century, with a 20th-century east wing added. The Gash family, who were village blacksmiths, have been documented as living here since 1756. The building is constructed of red brick, which was partly painted, and features a moulded wooden eaves cornice along with steep hipped roofs covered in old red tiles.

The house faces north and is set back from the road, with a three-window facade. It has flush 18th-century casement windows that contain rectangular leaded panes and iron plate casements. An eight-panel door is located between the first and second windows from the west, framed by a wooden doorcase. This doorcase has an open pediment supported by carved trusses with a cusped cross-member. Originally, the house had a single-storey end-chimneys plan, which was altered by the addition of another storey and a parallel rear wing that includes a staircase, a cellar, and a low dairy situated in the southwest half underground, with a low pantry above it on the ground floor. A straight joint on the west end indicates where the extension was made.
