Description

Wood Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early 18th century, with later work added to the rear and modernisation and extension around 1950. It is constructed of red brick and features a wooden modillion eaves cornice and a hipped plain tiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a symmetrical five-bay garden front where the central bay is slightly set forward. The garden front has sash windows with glazing bars in flush frames, all under flat brick arches. A notable feature is the good doorway with a Gibbs surround and a pedimented hood supported by richly carved wooden brackets, leading to a half-glazed door with raised and fielded lower panels. To the left, there is a three-light curved bay added around 1950. The facade facing the road has three bays with sash windows similar to those on the garden front, but the central doorway has been replaced by a window, and there are two gabled dormers. Inside, there is a fine 18th-century pine staircase with turned balusters and carved ends on the treads, as well as two impressive ground floor fireplaces: one made of wood with detached fluted columns and another made of marble, decorated with urns.
