Description

Broughall House is a farmhouse dating from the mid-18th century, with additions made in the mid to late 19th century. The house is constructed of red brick with painted sandstone dressings, and has a plain tile roof. It is two storeys high, with a gable-lit attic. Features include a plinth, chamfered quoins, a moulded stone eaves cornice, parapeted gable ends with stone copings and shaped kneelers to the rear, and external brick end stacks. The front of the house has two, one, and two bays. It contains boxed glazing-bar sashes (15 panes) with painted stone sills and painted stone lintels incorporating raised triple keystones. The central entrance has a six-panelled door with glazed upper panels, set within a lugged moulded architrave. A 20th-century hipped-roofed glazed porch/conservatory has been added to the front, with a half-glazed door. A two-storey brick rear wing, with a dentil brick eaves cornice and an integral brick end stack, was added in the 19th century.

The interior includes an 18th-century oak staircase rising to the attic, with three flights around a square well. It has landings, an open string with cut brackets, turned balusters (two per tread), and a ramped moulded handrail, wreathed in a quarter turn to a columnar foot newel. One ground-floor room to the right has a moulded cornice. Panelled internal window shutters are also present. A rear gable kneeler bears an inscribed date: 175?.
