Description
The footbridge to the north of Whitchurch Railway Station, built around 1872 for the London and North Western Railway Company, is a Grade II listed structure. This footbridge is a single span suspension bridge designed for pedestrians to cross over the railway line. It features A-frame wooden vertical supports that are reinforced with iron bracing and joints. These supports are anchored at the base to curved stone foundation blocks using iron rods. At each end of the bridge decking, small outer frames connect to iron steps. The decking consists of wooden planks set within an iron frame, complemented by thin iron balustrades. The suspension system includes forged iron cables and chains from which the flat decking is suspended by iron rods. This footbridge is recognized as a very early and rare example of a pedestrian suspension bridge.
