Description

The building is a barn and stable attached at Stonehouse, dating from the late 16th century, with a 17th-century north porch and an 18th-century stable. The structure features timber frames set on red brick sills, with dark weatherboarding and steep old red tile roofs. Originally a five-bay barn facing north, it has a central gabled north porch and a winnowing door at the rear accessed by external steps. The two eastern bays have been demolished, and a chimney and fireplace have been added to the north side of the westernmost bay. Notable architectural details include heavy jowled posts, curved braces to the wallplates and tie-beams, wide-spaced studs, a squint-butted scarf joint in the south wallplate, and a clasped-purlin roof supported by collar and queen-strut trusses. The added north porch has higher eaves and straight braces. The lower stable, which has four bays, is attached to the southwest corner of the barn and faces east, featuring stable doors and two windows. It has unjowled posts and a clasped-purlin roof with heavy inclined queen-posts. The building is included for its group value.
