Description

The war memorial in Nettleden with Potten End was constructed in 1922 from Portland Stone and stands 5 meters high. It features a square plinth, which is accessed by two steps, topped with a tapering shaft that is adorned by a cross. At the center of the cross is an engraved cup, and there is a foliate motif at the base of the shaft. The southern face of the plinth bears the inscription: 'TO THE DEAR MEMORY OF/ DAVID NEWBOLD GAUSSEN/LIEUTENANT BEFORDSHIRE REGIMENT/BORN 25 JULY 1893/WOULDED DEVILLE WOOD, BATTLE OF SOMME/DIED THE NEXT DAY 31 JULY 1916/BURIED AT DERNANCOURT/THIS CROSS IS DEDICATED/BY HIS PARENTS, BROTHERS AND SISTERS.'

On the west and east faces, there are carved quotes from scripture, while the north face reads: 'IN MEMORY ALSO/OF ALL THOSE FROM THIS PARISH/AND NEIGHBOURHOOD/WHO DIED IN THE GREAT WAR/THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVER MORE.'

This memorial serves as an architecturally distinct tribute to those who fell during the First World War, reminding the local community of the significant impact of these events.
