Description

This milestone, located 750 meters to the west of the church at National Grid Reference TL 0133 1075, dates from the early 19th century and was commissioned by the 7th Earl of Bridgewater. Made of Portland stone, it is a small square milestone that is not associated with any turnpike. The milestone measures about 15 inches square and stands 2 feet high, featuring chamfered corners and a blunt pyramidal top. The south face is inscribed with '27/MILES/[TO/LONDON]'. This road serves as a distant approach to Ashridge mansion. There is a similar milestone in the parish of Little Gaddesden on the same road, which has a complete inscription.
