3/221 Milestone 750m to - W of Church at Nat Grid Ref TL 0133 1075

Milestone at Grid Ref TL 0133 1075. Early C19 for 7th Earl of Bridgewater. Portland stone. A small square milestone not connected with any turnpike, with figures cut into the stone. About 15ins square and 2ft high with chamfered corners and blunt pyramidal top. Inscribed on S face '27/MILES/[TO/LONDON]'. The road forms a distant approach to Ashridge mansion. Similar milestone in Little Gaddesden parish on same road, with full inscription. (Branch Johnson (1970) 111).
