Description
This is an 18th-century milestone located on the roadside at Graveley Jacks Hill, which was established for the Stevenage-Biggleswade Turnpike Trust founded in 1720. The milestone is made of white freestone, likely Portland stone, and measures about 15 inches square, standing approximately 39 inches above the ground. The top of the stone is shaped like a blunt pyramid, and there is a broad arrow cut into the back of the top, indicating it serves as an Ordnance Survey benchmark. The east face features an inscription in deeply cut 18th-century lettering that reads '34/MILES/from/LONDON'. Weathering marks on the rear suggest that the stone was turned around when the inscription needed to be recut.
