Description

This milestone, located opposite Cromer Close on Nettleden Road in Little Gaddesden, dates from the early 19th century and was commissioned by the 7th Earl of Bridgewater. Made of Portland stone, it is a small square structure measuring about 15 inches on each side and standing 2 feet high. The milestone is not associated with any turnpike and features figures cut into the stone. Its edges are chamfered, with the top forming a blunt pyramid shape. A mason's mark, "E," is carved into the south face, while the west side is inscribed with "28/MILES/TO/LONDON."
